Introduction: Previous studies have not focused on the relationship between patient age and the risk of recurrent dislocation after medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the risk factors and incidence of recurrent patellar dislocation after surgical treatment (MPFL reconstruction) in two age groups: patients who had a patellar dislocation and surgery up to and including the age of 14 and those over the age of 14. Material and methods: The study included 66 patients, divided into two groups: patients who had a patellar dislocation up to and including the age of 14 and those over the age of 14. A subjective and physical examination was performed, available medical records were analyzed, and magnetic resonance imaging of the operated knee joint was performed. Results: In both study groups, a correlation was observed between the lateral femoral trochlea angle (LTI) and the TT-TG index and recurrent dislocation (p<0.05). In the younger group, a significant correlation was noted between recurrent patellar dislocation and the Caton-Deschamps index and the intercondylar groove angle (p<0.05). In the older group, a significant correlation was noted between patellar inclination and dislocation (p<0.05). Conclusions: The incidence of recurrent patellar dislocation after isolated MPFL reconstruction depends on the patient's age.
