Praca doktorska
The doctoral dissertation analyzes the dynamics ol morphological changes in selected facial muscles during performing facial expressions, focusing on the zygomaticus major, procerus, corrugator supercilii, orbicularis oculi, and the frontal belly of the occipitofrontalis muscle. In vivo studies, based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), enabled the creation of a unique image database capturing facial expressions associated with joy, anger, surprise, and sadness. A detailed anatomical description was provided, defining for the first time the contraction patterns of facial muscles and their role in shaping facial expressions, emphasizing the influence of agonists and antagonists on facial compartment stabilization. The study challenges the traditional view that facial expression is the key indicator of muscle function, highlighting changes in muscle thickness as a more reliable marker of activity. The developed atlas of facial muscle function can be applied in plastic and reconstructive surgery, diagnostics, rehabilitation, and therapy monitoring, underscoring the significance of imaging studies in clinical practice.
